One of my supervisors at the place I volunteer had the brilliant idea to start a weight loss group for our residents. I just made the fliers for the first meeting today, and I’m excited to see who shows up next week.

Since many of the patients we work with are on many different kinds of medication, there is a concern about its affect on their weight.

There are many factors that can get in the way of someone’s weight loss efforts, including:

  • Prescription Medication
  • An underactive thyroid
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Overestimating calories burned during exercise
  • Taking the weekend “off”

You can read more here. I hope we’ll have a chance to address the issues that apply to the residents. I’m eager to hear what’s on their minds and what they’re like to work on. It will also be good practice for me! Weight loss is not my specialty—I’m too paranoid about, like, hurting someone’s feelings or triggering an eating disorder, but given that two thirds of the U.S. population is either overweight or obese, it’s something I’ll probably find myself spending a lot of time talking about.
