As we get into the holiday season, it’s an important time to recommit to our own health and wellness. I don’t know about you, but I feel like there are always a lot of logistics to figure out, lists to make. While it’s nice that we’re primed to have other people on our mind, it can mean that we’re more likely to place ourselves at the bottom of our list of priorities. It’s also cold and flu season, so being on top of our self-care is vital for staying well. I see this all the time, where people push themselves so hard through November and December, only to wind up too sick to attend holiday gatherings or they drag themselves out anyway. Giving your friends and family members a nasty bug is not the way to say, “I love you” during the holidays. I’ve been on both sides of that equation and it totally sucks.

I’m a big fan of little upgrades that make it easier and more enjoyable to fit self-care into a busy life, so when the folks at Shantiva reached out to me about trying out their copper pitcher, I was excited to incorporate it into my own self-care routine.

Hydration is such an important part of supporting our wellness. It helps our brain and body function efficiently by carrying oxygen to our cells and supports regular digestion, which is important because a huge portion of immune  system function occurs in the gut. Drinking enough water also helps the kidneys flush toxins through our body’s naturally built in detoxification system. Drinking enough also helps keep mucosal lining of our eyes, mouth, and throat moist so invading pathogens aren’t as able to creep in there and make us sick.

I find that for myself and my clients, having a beautiful drinking vessel in sight makes it so much easier to remember to sip water through the day.

Drinking from a copper pitcher is believed to have some health benefits as well, as the copper infused its healing properties into the water. According to ancient Ayurvedic health principles, drinking from copper vessels is thought to help balance the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, to bring the body, mind, and spirit into harmony. We could all use a little of that!

Copper is a naturally antibacterial material, so while these jugs, could be considered self-sterilizing you still want to clean them on occasion with some mild soap and water. Just a note: be careful not to put anything acidic in there, as there is some concern it could cause excess leaching of the copper into the beverage.

At the very least, a copper pitcher is a beautiful way to support your wellness this holiday season and beyond and makes a beautiful hostess or housewarming gift. Each one is handcrafted with care. You can get yours online at the Shantiva store. Cheers to your health this holiday season!
