Happy Monday. Who’s hungry?

A lot of people have asked me recently about my posts on adding cocoa powder to yogurt. This is one of my go-to healthy, weird-is-good snacks that does double-duty as breakfast, so the first week of New Year’s Resolution season seemed like the perfect time to share the details.

So first, the why: The cocoa powder adds 2 grams filling fiber plus a delicious flavor and rich texture. This is great when you want a hit of chocolate in the afternoon without the “OMG, I just ate a bunch of chocolate” food guilt. I’m a big fan of Greek and Icelandic yogurt because I love the thick texture, but feel free to use regular yogurt instead if you prefer. With a few simple additions, this works well for breakfast too.

YogurtFrozenBerries

Use fresh or frozen berries and feel free to add a garnish of your favorite nut or seed butter.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon nut or seed butter (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dark chocolate chips (optional)

Directions:

  • Stir yogurt, cocoa powder, and cinnamon together until well mixed.
  • Top with raspberries and chocolate chips.

Notes: To make it more filling for breakfast, add a tablespoon of coconut flour, ground flax, or chia seeds. This is also delicious with a garnish of cacao nibs or coconut flakes instead of chips, or a spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter. No raspberries? Try blackberries instead—that’s my other favorite.
