I grew up not really knowing that I loved olives. It really wasn’t until my mid-twenties, as I got in touch with my savory tooth, that I realized I was actually kind of obsessed. This recipe was definitely a gateway, and my 2010 trip to Italy was also a big wake-up call to my taste buds. Discovering snack packs of olives was a big game-changer. During my first clinical job (and well into my next ones), I used to bring them to eat when I started to get hangry or to add to a salad. I actually still do this at home all the time.
Aside from being delicious, olives make a nutritious addition to your diet. Olives are a great source of heart healthy monounsaturated fats, which help lower the LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol. Also worth nothing: fat is also helpful for helping us feel more satisfied so we’re less prone to overeat, and getting enough fat is key to healthy hair, skin, and nails and maintaining proper body functioning.
If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen some shots from a lovely lunch event I went to last week that was hosted by Olive You, Europe’s Finest Table Olives. The event was held at the Meatpacking Fig + Olive location here in NYC, where we tasted a variety of olives as part of a beautiful meal and learned about their health benefits.
There are many ways to enjoy olives: pitted, sliced, cured, stuffed, flavored with herbs and sliced, made into a spread, or pressed into it. Of the many varieties of olives produced in the European Union (EU), the most popular are Kalamata, Konservolia, and Throumpa olives. It was so fun to try so many types in different ways. As a parting gift, event attendees also received little snack packs of olives. So up my alley!
