When it comes to weight loss, a lot of people will tell you to eliminate this or that food group or to load up on protein to shed pounds. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those who believe that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.

A Kansas State University professor is aiming to prove that junk food does not necessarily lead to weight gain by eating a calorie-controlled diet of high-fat snacks. Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition who teaches a class on energy balance and obesity, said he wants to show that he can lose weight on an 1,800 calorie diet of crap. On the menu: breakfast pizza, chocolate cake rolls, chocolate bars,and sugary cereal.

He said, “The purpose is to illustrate metabolic, mental, and sociological issues surrounding weight. The principle is simple: eat fewer calories than I expend.”

However, he does expect his overall health to decline, so he’ll be monitoring his body mass index, body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.
