Love cereal? I know I do. On average, Americans eat around 160 bowls a year. Choosing a good cereal can be ridiculously complicated, though—with so many options and so many health claims and considerations to wade through, it can be overwhelming to pick something that’s going to help you start your day off right.

While at a Bed & Breakfast in Newport, I had the hardest time deciding between Raisin Bran (lots of fiber but also lots of sugar) and Rice Crispies (fewer calories and sugar, but less than a gram of fiber). I eventually went with the Raisin Bran, reasoning that the extra fiber would keep me full for longer, but it still felt like choosing between the lesser of two evils—except less dramatic, because at the end of the day, it’s just one bowl of cereal in the grand scheme of a life where I can buy what I want.

The folks at Eat This, Not That recently put out a list of Best and Worst Cereals. It’s definitely worth checking out and keeping in mind next time you go to the grocery store.

Their top choice for the best? Fiber One Original.

“Great” options include: Kix, Cheerios, Grape-Nuts, Kashi GoLean, Shredded Wheat Original, and Organic Smart Bran.

The Worst Cereal honors go to Golden Crisp. I’m actually kind of shocked it wasn’t Lucky Charms or something else with lots of weird mini-marshmallows.

The list also includes some “good,” “fair,” and “bad” choices, to cover the gray area.
