When it comes to staying healthy while traveling, a common mistake I see people make is not planning out their return trip day at all. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but taking a few minutes to think through it ahead of time can make the day much smoother. For example, if you can, fit in some physical activity before you depart, awesome. Packing a few extra healthy snacks or scoping out what you can buy to bring on the ride home can also be helpful so you don’t get hangry or feel awful from eating shitty road food.
As I wrote about in Monday’s blog post, I traveled to Boston recently for an event at the Westin Copley Place. For today’s What I Ate Wednesday post I’m sharing a look at the day I came home. Some return-trip days are smoother than others, and this one actually went pretty well.
My train left around noon, so rather than try to get work done on my computer like I would normally do, I took advantage of a free first-timer class at the YogaWorks on Boylston Street Sunday morning. I love seeing what yoga communities are like to other places I travel. It was also a really nice reminder that it really is a practice you can do anywhere.
I had hoped I”d be able to pick up a grab-and-go salad from the nearby Pret for the train but they hadn’t made any yet. It’s so funny, the random things I take for granted in NYC, where you can basically find anything at any time of day. It was fine, though—I went for my other go-to there: the egg & spinach pot. I balanced it out with an orange and broccoli florets snacks (which I’d brought from home).
On the train I got a lot of work done but also read Brian Weiss’ Many Lives, Many Masters, which I’d first heard about as a teenager. Regardless of whether you believe in reincarnation, it’s an interesting read, and I definitely see the value in hypnosis and past-life regression as an effective therapeutic tool. Consider the source, though—my mom is a psychotherapist who practices hypnotherapy, so I grew up thinking it was the most “normal” thing ever.
Anyway, by the time I got home, it was barely 4 pm, so I actually did some grocery shopping and meal prep. Sometimes that works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but it felt great to have a chance to collect my thoughts and get set for the week ahead.
Here’s a look at what I ate through the day:
- Breakfast: Plain Greek yogurt with a Hodgson Mill Travel Flax Chia pack before yoga and a banana
- Pre-Train Snack: The last few pieces of jerky and the remaining 1/3 of this kombucha
- “Lunch”: An egg & spinach pot from Pret, an orange, and Trader Joe’s broccoli snacks
- Afternoon Snack: plain Greek yogurt (yes, again) with cocoa powder and berries
- Dinner: A big salad with (cooked) frozen veggies, zoodles, and sardines packed in olive oil; tea and a square of dark chocolate for dessert (not pictured)
