Oh dear. So, a lot of you guys know how much I hate yogurt commercials, but I think this one might be one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Yoplait was asked to pull this ad because it was accused of promoting eating disorders.

If the woman’s inner monologue about deserving a slice of cheesecake for being “good today”and the bargaining with herself about “one large slice while jogging in place followed by eight celery sticks” weren’t bad enough, when another woman swoops in for a cheesecake-flavored yogurt, the woman having the disordered debate with herself compliments her on having lost weight.

I don’t know what’s worse: this commercial, or the fact that the company didn’t see anything wrong with it prior to being contacted by Lynn Grefe, president of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), who says that for those coping with the disorders, “opening a refrigerator is like walking off a bridge. And to see this behavior in a commercial tells people with eating disorders, see, it’s even on TV. It’s ok and normal for my head to go through all these mental exercises.”

Still, I don’t think the company should be praised for pulling this ad. I think they should be ridiculed for creating it in the first place. Why can’t we go back to yogurt commercials about old monks in the mountains living to be 100? Even Jamie Lee Curtis’ irregularity is better than this!
